These gatherings are open and welcoming to all who wish to join us for reflection and prayer. At the 2006 Pax Christi Twin Cities (PCTC) retreat, the PCTC council made a decision to offer a monthly prayer/meditation time for peacemakers. At the retreat, Sister Mary White, OSB retold the gospel story of Jesus and Mary visiting Martha who complained to Jesus that she was doing all of the work. She was preparing their meal and Mary was not working, but just visiting. Jesus said that Mary, was doing the most important work - visiting. Our tendency is to overvalue Martha’s role and to devalue and judge harshly Mary’s role. Jesus taught us that we need to counterbalance Martha’s role of “doing”- working on the practical tasks of making a living-with Mary’s role of “being,” that is, focusing on our loving relations with ourselves, with one another, with God’s creation and with God. Too many times we can fall into the Martha role of exclusive focus on our work and goals for success in peacemaking. As Thomas Merton, in Contemplation in a World of Action states, “The one who attempts to act and do things for others or for the world without deepening his own self-understanding, freedom, integrity and capacity to love will not have anything to give to others. He will communicate to them the contagion of his own obsessions, his aggressiveness, his ego-centered ambitions, his delusions about ends and means, and his doctrinaire prejudices and ideas.” Please consider joining us in our attempts to “be” more, not “do” more.
